Review: Nicpreen: Never Ever
Review by Kegan Gaspar.
South African music lovers let out a collective sigh of defeat when Al Bairre announced their break-up. The band left a distinct mark on the South African music scene and enthralled us all with a vibrancy that no other musical act on the scene is capable of.
We will miss them.
But fear not. For we (thankfully) still have Nicholas Preen.
Cringe warning: this is most likely going to sound like the incoherent ramblings of a fanboy. And that’s exactly what it is.
Preen released his first single last month from his debut solo EP, La de de ha de da (swoon). The single is entitled Never Ever and it is an absolute gem. Never Ever sets Preen apart from his previous releases with Al Bairre and the single has left us quaking in anticipation for his solo EP. Although Never Ever has the same vibrancy and energy that drew fans to Al Bairre’s sound, the song is undeniably all Preen.
The song is a three-minute extravaganza of energy and snazziness. It’s catchy and effortlessly cool and Preen sounds comfortably at ease in the song. It’s hard not to get caught up in the joy that is Never Ever.
