Ray-Ban will be hosting its highly anticipated music event, OneSight Acoustics for the first time in Johannesburg. The Good Luck Bar will be presenting 4 events for the series during October and November 2016. The first of 4 events will be taking place on 16 October and will feature Hugh Masakela, Shortstraw, Akio Kawahito and New Academics. OneSight is a global public nonprofit organization which provides sustainable access to quality vision care and eye wear to those who cannot afford it or do not have access to it. We spoke to New Academics about their set at this event.

You’ll be performing at OneSight Acoustics on 16 October. What are your expectations for your set there?

Well it’s a great venue, and definitely fun to perform there. Otherwise it should pretty much be a chilled Sunday daytime show, we’ll be bringing a slightly more mellow set to suit the circumstances of the show.

Is OneSight’s cause one that is particularly close to the band’s hearts?

I’d say it is significantly closer to our cheekbones and noses than to our hearts! But it’s definitely a great cause that deserves as much support as it can get and we’re very happy to be associated with the event.

Earlier this year, you released a new album titled Growler Front. How would you describe the overall sound of the album?

It’s quite varied, hopefully containing a degree of contrast. We prefer other people to listen to the album and form their own opinions, rather than for us to categorise it as belonging to one genre or another.

What is the band’s favourite song from the album?

I wouldn’t say that we could pinpoint an individual track that we all prefer, but my personal favourite is probably “The Book of Matches”.

How does the band prepare for live performances?

We generally rehearse in the run-up to the show and then we assemble at the venue an hour or so before the show and hang around until it’s time to go on stage. We do individual as well as group preparation, as we’re always trying to keep our game up.

You’ve been playing a bunch of different shows this year. Which has been your favourite so far?

Probably Oppikoppi, the audience was awesome, a great vibe.

You can win tickets to this great event! we’re giving away one set of double tickets to OneSight Acoustics on 16 October. Simply tell us which artist you are most excited to see at the event and you could win. Competition ends 6 October 2016. You can enter here.
