Up-and-coming musician Matt Carstens has been making waves in the industry recently. We caught up with him ahead of his performance at this year’s Hermanus Craft Beer Festival.

This year, you released the album 2D Heart. How did you experience the recording and release process?

I found the recording and releasing process of 2D Heart really exciting. Obviously I felt quite a bit of pressure because of the fact that it was my debut album, but I’ve always been confident in the work that I put out into the world. I wrote the entire album on my own so there weren’t really any cases of creative difference or anything like that. I was also lucky enough to be able to record it at Kill City Blues studio’s, which made the whole recording process easy and painless. I’m really happy with the album.

Which song on the album is your favourite?

At the moment I would say “Bisous”. Just because it’s so different from the rest of the album, bringing in a more electronic vibe to it, which is something I’m experimenting with with my new material.

This December, you’ll be performing at the Hermanus Craft Beer festival. What are your expectations for the event?

I lived in Hermanus for a year, so I have nothing but high hopes for the Craft Beer Festival. I’m sure it’s going to be a great time for everyone attending!

What kind of vibe can fans expect from your set at the event?

I’m making sure that there’s something for everyone in the set. I’m mostly playing my original material, so it’s going to be a very chilled vibe.

Which of your tracks is your favourite to perform live?

One of my new songs that I’m in the process of recording; it’s called J-song. It’s really high energy with a whole lot of loop pedal work, so it’s really fun to play.

Recently, you had the opportunity to work on a song with rock legend Francois van Coke. How did you experience working with him?

Working with Francois was a really amazing experience for me. He’s always been one of my icons when it comes to music so it was a real honour recording our song, “Broken Society” with him. Having a collaboration with him was a huge step for me on my musical journey and I’m really excited to see what the future holds for the song and for me as a musical artist.
