This Saturday, 1 October, will see the second instalment of the popular Let’s Twist Again event at the Good Luck Bar. We had a colourful, all-caps interview with Martin Rocka and The Sick Shop before the event.

You will be performing at the second Let’s Twist Again event this October. What are your expectations for your set?

WE WILL DELIVER PRIMAL FILTHY ROCK N ROLL WITH THE SUBTLETY OF A HAND GRENADE.

You also performed at the first Let’s Twist Again event. How did you experience this?

THAT WAS A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT, PACKED FULL OF WONDERFUL FREAKS ‘N ROCKAS.

How did the group’s aesthetic fit in with the retro theme of the event?

WE’VE LOOKED THE SAME FOREVER, I THINK THEMES AND PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO FIT IN WITH US!

Speaking of the group’s stage aesthetic, how did it come about, initially?
I HAD PLAYED IN A FEW ‘FAMOUS’ SA BANDS AND REALLY JUST WANTED PEOPLE TO NOT ASSOCIATE OR PUSH MARTIN ROCKA IN ANYWAY BECAUSE OF THOSE CONNECTIONS. ALSO AT THE TIME [I was] INVOLVED IN RECORD CONTRACTS WITH OTHER BANDS AND THE COMPANIES HAD 1st OPTION ON SOLO PROJECTS FROM THE NAMES OF THE ARTISTS IN THE BAND, SO I THOUGHT ‘F*CK THEM!’, CALLED MYSELF MARTIN ROCKA AND WORE A MASK THOUGH IT WASN’T MY ‘LIKENESS’ – AND IT’S AS SICK AS F*CK.

Which songs do you most enjoy playing live?
ALL OF THEM! THESE SONGS COME FROM PURE LOVE FOR THE STYLE, BUT I’M A SHIT SINGER SO REALLY ENJOY INSTRUMENTALS WHERE THE GUITAR CAN SING FOR ME.

How does the group prepare for live shows?
NOWADAYS A LITTLE DRINK ‘N DRUGS, COMPARED TO THE PAST WHICH WAS A LOT, BUT WE DO ENJOY A GOOD REHEARSAL EVERY NOW AND THEN AND STILL LOVE A GOOD LAUGH BEFORE WE GO ON.
